Ontario Blue Cross has unveiled a new concept in health coverage designed to transition from coverage that protects the earning years (disability insurance) to coverage for the caring years (long term care insurance). Known as Hybrid coverage, this plan is cutting edge - designed to adapt to your changing needs no matter what your age.
Individuals can purchase a disability income plan while they are working to protect their income in the event of an accident or illness. As they near retirement and their need for disability insurance diminishes, a portion of the benefit converts to
long-term care facility coverage annually until the full benefit has transitioned to a long-term care facility policy.
As an alternative, an individual can initially purchase critical illness protection, that similarly transitions to long-term care coverage.
This program offers further optional enhancements such as inflation protection, hospitalization and loss of autonomy benefits that covers special medical tests, and other medical expenses leaving the dollars from the long term care coverage to be available for dealing with personal care and accommodations.

Manulife has completely revamped its Living Care plan. This long-term care coverage is one of the few that pays a benefit monthly without limiting where the individual can be receiving care or who can be acting as their caregiver. This offers the greatest flexibility during a claim because it functions like a monthly 'pay cheque'; following claims approval.
The individual selects a lump sum benefit amount (a 'pot 'of money from which they draw a fixed monthly benefit when needed).
This coverage is particularly attractive for couples who are both seeking coverage as they can share one common 'pot' between them, making the cost less than having two separate plans.
